Grant-in-Aid Research

Grant-in-Aid research covers projects where an external agency provides a grant (full or partial) as cash or in-kind support to advance CSIR-IGIB's research activities, capacity building and creation of national resources.

Key Features

  • Grant-in-Aid research covers projects where an external agency provides a grant (full or partial) as cash or in-kind (e.g., equipment, training) to support CSIR-IGIB's ongoing or new research activities, capacity building, surveys, database generation, or creation of specialized facilities.
  • The objective is advancement of knowledge, development of research tools, or creation of public-good outcomes. These projects are usually intended to support basic or exploratory research or to maintain / create nationally important research capabilities.
  • The work is not structured as a fee-for-service or product-development engagement, but as a scientifically driven programme where CSIR-IGIB retains high academic and intellectual independence.
  • Intellectual Property generated shall belong to CSIR, but the primary outcome is knowledge generation and capacity building.

Suitable For

  • Longitudinal or population-scale database and resource generation (genomic, clinical, environmental).
  • Exploratory/basic research that underpins later translational work.
  • Creation or upgrade of high-value infrastructure (sequencers, HPC, specialized labs).
  • Training programmes and capacity building (workshops, fellowships, skill development).
  • Pilot surveys, surveillance programmes, or national-scale reference studies. These projects are not typically transactional product contracts; they are strategic, capability-focused investments.

Benefits to Grantors

  • Strategic access to CSIR-IGIB's scientific expertise and national research platforms.
  • Public-good outcomes (databases, normative studies) that de-risk downstream product development or market entry.
  • Opportunity to co-design studies with leading scientists, creating early visibility to emerging science.
  • Credibility & visibility from partnering with a national research institute.
  • Option to negotiate prior access / licensing to IP or data-use terms (see IP section).
