Shantanu Sengupta's lab focuses on identifying prediagnostic markers for cardiovascular disease using genetic, epigenetic, and proteomic approaches. His work explores thiols like homocysteine and cysteine, along with micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and folate in complex disorders.
Key Research Contributions
- Vitamin B12 deficiency linked with Coronary Artery Disease in Indian population
- Homocysteine metabolism impacts multiple biological pathways
- Link between nutrition, epigenetics, and complex diseases
- Association of CAD with DNA hypermethylation
- Proteomics identified biomarkers explaining ~88% of CAD cases
- First whole genome DNA methylation map in rat tissue
- Distinct mitochondrial epigenetic regulation patterns
His lab also demonstrated that Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to atherogenic risk in males and bone disease risk in females. He is currently leading long-term cohort studies to identify biomarkers for cardiovascular health in Indian populations.
